Let's not sugarcoat it. Finding housing in Bristol is a nightmare.
In fact, stories from other university towns would suggest that this is a widespread issue, and that students across the country are increasingly struggling to find good-quality places at an affordable price. In fact, a recent report from Bristol SU found that 37 percent of students have suffered 'significant negative impact' to their mental health as a direct result of their housing. Basically, it's a mess, and it'll take a lot to fix it.
Although it won't solve the housing crisis in Bristol, the SU's student housing fair is a new initiative which aims to 'equip you with the knowledge and resources you need to make informed decisions about your housing options'. The SU does operate as a letting agent, through SU Lettings, but no houses or flats will be offered or released at this event.
According to the SU, the fair is primarily aimed at first years moving out of halls for the first time, but everyone is welcome to attend. If you want to improve your situation next year, or just ask a question about your rights as a renter, this is the place for you.
The event will take place in the Anson Rooms in the Richmond Building on November 21 2024, and is free entry. You don't even need a ticket. All you need to do is show up. This is by far the easiest stage in house hunting, we assure you.
It'll begin at 12pm and go on until 4pm, featuring talks from Shelter and the university. There will also be several letting agents present that you can ask any burning questions to.
You can find out the exact timetable of events on the SU's website here. And, if you're lucky, you might even win a free houseplant to decorate your new home with. What's not to love?
Will you be at the housing fair?
