Epigram are recruiting for its 2019/20 Editorial Team!
Fancy joining the editorial team of one of the UK's leading student publications? Epigram is looking for Editors, Deputy Editors and Digital Editors for the new academic year.
Previous members of the team include Susanna Reid and James Landale, with many editors using their experience at Epigram in their new roles at the BBC, Sky News, The Times, The Independent, and ITV - to name a few.
Being on the editorial team of Epigram is an incredibly rewarding experience. General responsibilities will include commissioning and editing content, using multimedia platforms to enhance our readers' experience, and liasing with relevant bodies for your section.

News
Being on the news team can be a fast-paced yet incredibly rewarding job - and it is a lot easier than it sounds so get involved!
Editor
- You will lead Epigram's coverage of news and events, finding stories, as well as covering breaking news stories as they happen. Your duties will also include the design and lay up of the section in print and assisting the Digital editor in uploading content online.
- You will expected to maintain a close relationship with both the University press office and SU comms executive.
Digital Editor
- Your role will be to turn news stories into exciting and engaging online content suitable for social media platforms. You will also be expected to find and write stories relating to the University, students and local community issues and cover breaking news stories on social media platforms.
Deputy Editor
- As Deputy Editor, you will also be required to uncover and write news stories for Epigram and liaise with both the University and SU.
- Your role will also include creating digital content to upload to social media platforms and assisting with the design and lay up of the paper in print.
SU Correspondent
- Your role will focus on investigating stories relating to the Student’s Union. Whether this be attending an AMM or meeting with societies and elected officers, your job will be to find out what goes on behind the scenes and what the SU is doing for students.
- You will also assist with laying up the paper for print and online.
Investigations Editor
- As one of two Investigation Editors, you will be in charge of digging into and uncovering the hidden stories around the University and Bristol. Your focus will be on creating news and finding stories that other news outlets have not yet uncovered.
- You will also assist with laying up the paper for print and online.
Features
From interviews to investigations, Features goes behind the headlines to tell human-interest stories that make a difference. Features places an emphasis on in-depth narrative style articles which give our readers the whole story.
Editor
- You will be responsible for organising and conducting interviews; editing and writing narrative style articles which place an emphasis on story telling; laying up print in innovative way and managing a team of writers.
Digital Editor
- You will be responsible for presenting content in innovative and engaging ways online e.g podcasts, graphics, videos. You will also focus on social media management and engagement; website uploads and design.
Deputy Editor
- Contribute content and ideas to both Editor and Digital Editor; lay-up print; assist Digital Editor with Ghost publishing; assist with videos, podcasts etc.
Investigations Editor
- Carry out well-researched, in-depth investigations, working alongside the News investigations team.
- Following leads, constructing a story; building a source base; assist other editors when necessary; focus on human interest investigations which aren’t time dependent.
Opinion
Previously listed as Comment, Opinion seeks to represent the student body's full range of views. The Opinion team's role involves attracting writers of varying political and social stances, as well as getting the views of BME and LGBTQ+ students printed. In covering the views of students, Opinion provides a crucial ability to bring about change.
Editor
- Responsible for maintaining Epigram's balance of opinions- politically, socially and economically. Will be chiefly responsible for the content put out by Opinion, including whether certain pieces should be omitted, and will need to work very closely with the News team.
- Responsible for laying-up the Opinion section in the fortnightly printed issues of Epigram.
Digital Editor
- In charge of producing multimedia comment to express the views of students, such as filming interviews on campus and thinking of ways to best utilise social media.
- Must be creative in their approach to reaching the widest possible audience, and ensuring all students feel they can present their view.
Deputy Editor
- Help to create the fortnightly printed edition of Opinion, by working closely with the Editor.
- Help shape the direction of Opinion and seek out minority and excluded student viewpoints.
- Aid the Digital Editor in producing multimedia content, such as videos, weekly roundups and podcasts.
SciTech
Both Bristol as a city and UoB as a global research leader produce plenty of science and technology stories, breakthroughs, and entrepreneurial successes. The SciTech section should concisely relay this exciting information to the general student body, using an accessible yet accurate tone.
Editor
- Responsible for fortnightly lay up foremost. Must ensure that there is a good content mix of Bristol based science and tech news alongside national/global news.
- Should also seek out interviews with Bristol based scientists and tech entrepreneurs.
Digital Editor
- Supporting the Editor in fortnightly lay-up of the print edition. Focus on researching local tech companies and science companies/ building good working relationships with these.
Deputy Editor
- Focus on creating video content, for example lab/ office tours.
- Organising and conducting interviews for potential podcast or video application.
- Also responsible for editing and uploading articles to the website.
The Croft
The Croft is our special lifestyle pullout, and this is the first year we will be hiring a small editorial team in these positions. There will be no more Living section, and instead general student lifestyle articles (e.g. Agony Aunt, housing, nightlife, societies, dating, etc) will be included in the first 2/3 pages of The Croft as a preamble to the Wellbeing, Food, Style, and Travel sections, which have their own editorial teams. The Croft editorial team will be responsible for the general lifestyle pages and articles, but also working with the other sections in the pullout to ensure cohesion of style and branding of The Croft.
Editor
- Responsible for organising general lifestyle articles for the early part of The Croft magazine and laying up those pages of the print edition. These pages should have a visual emphasis with striking photographs and playful layout of text
- Also needs to communicate with the Wellbeing, Food, Style, and Travel editors to ensure uniformity in each print edition.
- Secondary roles include uploading articles to the website, helping design The Croft front cover, and working on branding for the pull-out.
- Article ideas include agony aunts, horoscopes and advice on everything from housing to picnic spots.
Digital Editor
- Responsible for producing digital content for the general student lifestyle themes of The Croft and managing the online branding and social media presence of the pullout.
- This can include video content, podcasts, website and social media design, and more creative use of social media. Also secondary role to ensure cohesion of style across The Croft sections (Wellbeing, Food, Style, Travel).
Wellbeing
Wellbeing is one of our most popular sections, placing a focus on students’ physical and mental health. The section offers advice and guidance to students through compassionate and knowledgeable journalism.
Editor
- The Editor is responsible for organising and laying up fortnightly print content, alongside coming up with ideas to commission for both print and online articles.
- Due to the personal nature of Wellbeing's content, the Editor must also be open to suggestions for commissions, seeking to build open working relationships with their section writers.
Digital Editor
- The Digital Editor is responsible for stylising and uploading articles to Epigram's website and social media channels.
- You would also seek to explore media such as podcasts and video interviews, whilst respecting that people may wish to remain anonymous.
Deputy Editor
- Your role is to support both the Print Editor and the Digital Editor, helping with fortnightly lay-up alongside digitally editing and uplaoding articles.
- The Deputy Editor should also come up with ideas to comission.
Food
Student-friendly recipes, local restaurant reviews, and bar/cafe recommendations, Epigram Food aims to be a one-stop shop for the foodie haven that is Bristol! If you’re always trying the new openings around the city centre and fancy a taster in food journalism, a role in the Food team is what you need.
Editor
- Your role is to organise and lay up the print content, building a loyal writer base for recipes and reviews, liaising with existing and new restaurants to set up special visits or previews.
- Must have a strong visual eye as well as a keen interest in Food as The Croft is a visual pullout aiming to have standout, original photography and layout.
Digital Editor
- Videos of easy recipes is a crucial element of this role, as well as exploring other ways to expand the Food section’s digital content, such as visiting local kitchens behind the scenes.
- Also responsible for stylising and uploading articles to the website with plenty of attractive, original photos, polls, listicles, and more.
Deputy Editor
- Your role is to support the Editor and Digital Editor with both print and online output. This will include assisting in print layup, uploading articles to the website, coming up with content ideas, editing videos and more.
Style
There is an idiosyncratic style to Bristol students and a general interest in fashion among the population. The Style section should appeal to wide range of students and capture the imaginations of our resident fashionistas.
Editor
- Your role involves designing and laying up the print edition, making sure that the pages are eye catching, sourcing a mixture of photographs and illustrations to do so. You will be responsible for commissioning or writing Style articles, from longer discussions on topics such as ethical fashion to shorter, mood-board centred pieces such as Bristol’s best looks.
- You will also be expected to seek out and meet relevant people and companies in Bristol to interview and work with for exclusive content.
- You should support the Digital Editor in uploading articles to the website.
Digital Editor
- As Digital Editor, you must have a good eye for visual content. Your role will involve creating content for social media and online, from eye catching Instagram posts to short videos of interviews.
- You will also be expected to upload articles to the website and design their online format.
Deputy Editor
- Your role is to support the Editor and Digital Editor with both print and online output. This will include assisting in print layup, uploading articles to the website, coming up with content ideas, editing videos and more.
- From interviews to attending fashion events, you will also be expected to write and find interesting stories that appeal to a student audience.
Travel
The Travel section aims to highlight affordable student holidays and the best places to visit. This can include more diverse content, such as interviews or listicles. Most importantly, Travel is a great section to showcase brilliant student photography from all around the world.
Editor
- Stepping away from the gap-yah stereotype, we want to know where students are travelling and what you can do on a budget with your student loan. As Editor, you will write and commission content suitable for a student audience.
- You will also be expected to conduct exciting interviews, whether they be with travel bloggers or students themselves.
- As Editor, your role will also include the design and layup of the paper in print and you will be expected to source a mixture of photographs and illustrations to make your section engaging and vibrant.
Digital Editor
- As Digital Editor, you must have a good eye for visual content. Your role will involve creating content for social media and online, from eye catching Instagram posts to short videos of interviews.
- You will also be expected to upload articles to the website and design their online format.
Deputy Editor
- Your role is to support the Editor and Digital Editor with both print and online output. This will include assisting in print layup, uploading articles to the website, coming up with content ideas, editing videos and more.
Film and TV
The Film & TV is one of our most popular sections due to the vibrancy of the Bristol film scene. With wonderful independent cinemas, such as Watershed and The Cube, and a high level of student output, there’s more potential here than just reviews and a local angle provides a unique coverage.
Editor
- Main role is to organise the fortnightly print editions and give a general direction to the section.
- Needs to liaise with local cinemas, especially Watershed, and film related events PR and distribute reviews and coverage among writers.
- Sets the tone of communication across the Film & TV writers and there will be times where articles have to be quickly turned around releases so will need to be reliable throughout the week.
- Should support the Digital Editor in uploading articles to the website.
Deputy Editor
- Main role is to support the Film & TV Editor produce the fortnightly print editions.
- Also a wider expectation to work closely with writers on articles in development and to support a wide coverage of film and TV, including student produced content.
Digital Editor
- Main role is to organise and produce digital content to support the Film & TV articles and direction. Examples of this could be interviews or behind-the-scenes with local or student filmmakers, online polls, and engaging social media graphics.
- Therefore, should be keen to learn and use video, audio, and graphics skills including editing.
- Also be responsible for the uploading and presentation of articles on the website.
Deputy Digital Editor
- Main role is to support the Digital Editor with creating and uploading content to the website and social media accounts. Should be willing to learn how to produce and edit videos, audio and graphics.
Arts
Bristol has recently been the named the ‘Most Artistic City in the UK’ so plenty to cover here. Student produced theatre should be a priority and organising writers to do first night reviews of the majority of student drama is the primary task of the Arts team. Other popular areas include literature, careers in the Arts, and creative writing.
Editor
- Main role is to organise the fortnightly print editions and give a general direction to the section.
- Needs to liaise with local theatres and drama/arts societies, distributing reviews and coverage among writers.
- Sets the tone of communication across the Arts writers and there will be times where articles have to be quickly turned around releases so will need to be reliable throughout the week.
- Should support the Digital Editor in uploading articles to the website.
Deputy Editor
- Main role is to support the Arts Editor produce the fortnightly print editions.
- Also a wider expectation to work closely with writers and societies on articles in development and to support a wide coverage of local performances, especially student produced content.
Digital Editor
- Main role is to organise and produce digital content to support the Arts articles and direction. Examples of this could be interviews or behind-the-scenes with local or student creatives, photography and engaging social media graphics.
- Therefore, should be keen to learn and use video, audio, and graphics skills including editing.
- Also be responsible for the uploading and presentation of articles on the website.
Deputy Digital Editor
- Main role is to support the Digital Editor with creating and uploading content to the website and social media accounts. Should be willing to learn how to produce and edit videos, audio and graphics.
Music
Bristol has one of the best and most diverse music scenes in the UK. The Music section must cover local gigs, upcoming local artists and any students involved. The content should be a balance of local news, reviews, interviews, and longer features or discussions.
Editor
- Main role is to organise the lay-up of the print every two weeks, ensuring that there is a good balance of local music news, interviews, reviews and feature pieces. Local music news can also interviews with new and upcoming bands/ promoting new bands on the Bristol scene.
- The editor is also expected to maintain the strong relationships with local and regional press contacts that have been built by previous music teams. In this, they will request press passes and photography passes for Epigram’s music writers too.
Deputy Editor
- Support the Editor in laying up the print edition every fortnight. Also take responsibility for requesting press passes for other Epigram Music writers.
Digital Editor
- Main role is to produce a variety of digital content, alongside editing and uploading articles to the website and also social media. The Digital Editor should also seek to make close contact with Bristol-based gig photographers and reach out to music writers for interest in obtaining photopasses as well.
- Digital Editor should also seek to organise video interviews, particularly with local artists. Potential for podcast opportunities here as well.
Deputy Digital Editor
- Must support the Digital editor in all roles, primarily focusing on uploading and editing articles.
- Should also ensure a regular Instagram presence - uploading gig photography and clips of video interviews.
Sport
The main aim of the Sport section is to cover the most important stories of the student sport community: the team successes, individual awards, community engagement, and professional progression. There is a wider scope to include student opinions on the sporting world, but also catch up with University of Bristol alumni or local Bristol teams who are competing at the highest level.
Editor
- Main role is to organise the fortnightly lay-up of the print edition with a focus on student sport and engaging photography.
- Should have a keen interest in a variety of University sport and keep track of the University’s teams from Performance Level to Intramural.
- Organise team to cover sporting events in person and talk to athletes in order to create engaging, student specific content.
Digital Editor
- Main role is organise and produce innovative digital content for the Sports section including videos, podcasts, graphics and maintaining the Intramural section of Epigram’s website.
- Lead the expansion of Epigram’s sports coverage to include video and audio journalism and have a keen interest in learning how to film, edit, and produce video packages.
- Also be responsible for the uploading and presentation of articles on the website.
Student Sport Correspondent
- Correspondents should physically attend BUCS matches on Wednesday afternoons or Intramural sport and report on events in an engaging manner. This would include interviewing athletes, coaches and fans and may include photography.
- The role would require organising and maintaining match reports, fixture and results lists and building professional relationships with the University’s sports teams. Correspondents will also be responsible for ensuring the Intramural section of the website is up-to-date.*
Puzzles
A role for lovers of crosswords, codewords, sudokus, dot-to-dots, and more, the Puzzles section is filled out by students across campus during study breaks. The invention of original puzzles to fit in with wider Epigram coverage or popular culture is the main responsibility and the accuracy and functionality of them is crucially important.
Editor
- Your role will be to create the exciting and varied brain teasers that appear in Epigram, design their layout in the paper and also online.
Sub-editors
Chief Proofreader
- Your role will be to organise the proofreading of the paper and website, ensuring that each section is covered by the sub-editors and also checking the paper and website yourself.
- You will be a key member of the Epigram team, ensuring the maintenance of a good brand image, and able to write and contribute to any section.
Subeditor
- As a sub-editor, your role will be to ensure the layout of each issue and online is up to scratch by proofreading and amending mistakes. You will also be expected to have a good eye for captions and headlines and ensure that these are up to standard, liaising with section editors and replacing them with better alternatives when they are not.
- You will also be able to write or create content for any section you wish to.
Web Development Team
Epigram’s online presence over the past year has skyrocketed to around 10,000 reach and the move from Wordpress to Ghost, along with a new website design, has been a success. Now a better foundation has been developed, there is huge scope for the website to improve in speed, design and features. Being part a Web Developer at Epigram provides an opportunity to improve practical coding experience with a far-reaching and useful application.
Web Developer
- Responsible for innovation within Epigram’s website as well as maintenance. Will work closely with the Digital team to present student journalism in new and exciting ways.
- Requires keen interest in a variety of programming and markup languages, with a focus on Markdown, HTML, CSS, Javascript and Java.
- Respond to issues with the website effectively and work with the Digital team to push the boundaries of Epigram’s new website.
