By 2026/27 Senior Editorial Team
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and after the 2025/26 Editorial team’s incredible, hard work this year, we are opening applications for our new team. We’re hiring section editors, deputy editors, subeditors, a head of illustration and a head of photography. Our news reporters along with those looking to be involved in illustration, design and photography are not included in this application, but please feel free to express your interest at this time – these will be hired after the application process.
We are looking for applications from highly motivated, inspired individuals with ideas for their section, with less of a focus on experience, so don’t worry about how ‘qualified’ you are for the role. As a student newspaper, we want to provide aspiring writers, journalists, editors and those interested in design, illustration and social media with the experience that you can take forward into your careers.
Epigram received an award for being one of the SU’s top 50 influential societies this year, alongside winning Best Publication and Best design in the Student Publication Association South West Regional Awards and Best Design at the National Awards (sorry for the bragging moment). This means you will be part of an award winning student newspaper – that is something for the CV.
As well as this, this year Epigram hosted many events, including a pub quiz, a Christmas formal, a talk series and an end of year party. This provides the opportunity to create real friendships and become part of an amazing community. We will also be providing training sessions throughout the year so please don’t worry about your level of experience. If you have written for us or have editorial experience already, this is great, but not in any way essential.
Inclusivity is very important for Epigram, and we want to ensure that we are representing every student voice, so we are especially keen for those from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.
If you want to get involved but don’t feel like any of these roles are a good fit for you, please get in contact with us: getinvolved.epigram@gmail.com
Applications are open now and will close at 23:59:59 on Monday 15 June 2026. Please apply here.
Epigram wants you.
Design Team
This section focuses on making Epigram look as good as it reads. Last year we had resident photographers and a team of illustrators, alongside the leads. This year, we will have a lead photographer and a lead illustrator, and those interested in photography and illustration will claim commissions in the same manner as our writers.

Lead Photographer
- You’ll be in charge of organising a community of photographers, responding to requests from section editors and distributing work. You will have the opportunity to do some photojournalism, if you wish.
- We are really looking to diversify our storytelling and an enthusiastic photographer, with an eye for that conversation starting image, is what we’re looking for. (Reminder that there is also a photography category at the Student Publication Awards!)
- You will need to host specific meetings with photographers and create your own style guide with information on AI and copyright.
- You will create a Google Drive of photos that are taken by photographers and yourself, so that editors can insert them into articles when appropriate.
Lead Illustrator
- You’ll be in charge of organising a community of illustrators, responding to requests from section editors and distributing work.
- Illustrations for Featured Images online and within the print paper have been a big focus this year, so we would like to continue creating beautiful artwork that is integrated within the overall design of the paper.
- You will need to have a knowledge of digital drawing and how to make physical drawings transferable into the digital sphere.
- You will need to host specific meetings with illustrators and create your own style guide with information on AI and copyright.
We are not having specific social media roles this year, as subeditors will now also have the responsibility of creating Instagram posts (read subeditor description). However, we are hoping to place more effort into generating reels, TikToks and potentially even a podcast, so please get in contact if this is something you are interested in.

Comment

Whether that is moaning about the lack of study spaces or offering a take on the big issues on campus, your role in the Comment team is to seek out a diverse range of people, viewpoints, and subject matter.

- You will be responsible and accountable for the Comment section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.
- You will also be in charge of maintaining Epigram's balance of opinions – politically, socially, and economically. You will be chiefly responsible for determining which topics have relevance and relatability to the wider student community. You will be tasked to produce commissions for the Comment writers’ group chat every month.

- This role will help shape the direction of the Comment section and seek out minority and excluded student viewpoints to maintain a balance of opinion.

You should be a proactive thinker who can think of that killer question. Features are in-depth pieces interested in the humans behind the headlines, so this section is perfect if you want to try your hand at some good old-fashioned investigating. Features is also home of Epigram's Mind the Gap column, creating a platform for underrepresented voices.

Community
Community is a section that was only introduced last year, starting agony aunt, which had its own agony column responding to writers' burning questions, Epigram horoscopes, and the reintroduction of Epitome from the 1990s, which essentially is a ‘What’s On’ guide for students featuring gigs, club nights, student deals, and more. The section generated restaurant reviews, society spotlights and general guides to Bristol student life. Being part of the community team requires you to be explorative, outgoing and a general lover of Bristol.

- You will help divide the responsibilities of Community among team members each month, including Epigram horoscopes and agony aunt, but you will have creative freedom over which direction you want to take the newly established section.
- You will not be responsible for Epitome, as we will hire individual curators for this.
- If you have a particular interest in publishing, this role would be perfect for you.
Community Co-Deputy Editor (x2)

- You must keep up-to-date with book releases and get in contact with authors for book launches and potential interviews.
Film & TV
Culture writing can be a lot of fun. Being on the Film & TV team means having access to the booming film industry in Bristol, from press passes to the Bristol Film Festival and being at the generous end of our successful partnership with Watershed Cinema.

Film & TV Editor
- You will be responsible and accountable for the Film & TV section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.

- You should be a film fan, and have an interest in Bristol’s film scene, as well as student cinema.

This might include coming up with your own commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.

Music
Bristol has a diverse and vibrant music scene, and working in the music section of Epigram gives you exclusive access to it. You'll get dibs on concert passes and be the first to hear about exciting opportunities like artist interviews or album pre-release reviews. You’ll be expected to guide the section and ensure it is always student/Bristol focused, which means keeping an eye out for up and coming local artists.

- You will be able to attend concerts, write reviews, and interview artists for the section. Obviously, you need to love music. An interest in student-led music ventures is crucial too.
Music Co-Deputy Editor (x2)
- You will be responsible for helping the Music Editor produce the monthly editions in print and assisting with online coverage. This might include coming up with your own commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.
- You will also be able to attend and review concerts and select which new music this section covers.
SciTech (Science and Technology)
In both the city of Bristol and the University of Bristol, groundbreaking research and entrepreneurial successes are happening every day. It’s your job to find the most exciting, relevant, and interesting stories happening right here on campus and make them accessible for everyone. If you’re ready to turn scientific breakthroughs and tech innovations into compelling stories, this role is for you.

SciTech Editor
- You will be responsible and accountable for the SciTech section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.
- You will ensure that content is focused on Bristol-based science and tech news, which may at times link to national and global developments.
- You will have a talent for making complex topics accessible and exciting.
- You will also be eager to seek out interviews with Bristol-based scientists, tech entrepreneurs, and people working in the gaming industry to be on top of breakthroughs as they happen. You must have a passion for making science accessible to all, not just those studying STEM.
SciTech Co-Deputy Editor (x2)
- You will be responsible for helping the SciTech Editor produce the monthly editions in print, and assisting with online coverage. This might include coming up with your own commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.
- Your role will require a focus on researching local scientific and technological companies and building good relationships with these to provide coverage of new information.
Sport
There's more to university sports than Wednesday night socials. We keep readers up to date on the university’s sports teams’ successes and losses, as well as interviewing alumni who have gone on to be successful sportspeople.

Sport Editor
- You will be responsible and accountable for the Sport section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.
- You will lead your team in covering sporting events in-person and talk to athletes in order to create student-specific content. While university and campus activity should be your main focus, there is plenty of scope to cover local clubs and sports initiatives in Bristol as a whole. The role will also require organising and maintaining relationships with the University’s sports teams.
- You might play a sport yourself, or maybe you're a huge fan of pickleball. We're looking for people with unique insight into the sporting world, particularly those who have played/kept up with university sports.
Sport Co-Deputy Editor (x2)
- You will be responsible for helping the Sport Editor produce the monthly editions in print and assisting with online coverage. This might include coming up with your own commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.
- You’ll make sure that the section is regularly putting out high quality reports, opinion pieces, or interviews about all things sports.
Subeditors
- Each section of Epigram has two subeditors. Your role will be to ensure that your specific section’s print and online content reads with as few grammatical, spelling, and visual mistakes as possible.
- You will be expected to have a keen eye for detail. Epigram’s style guide will be your bible, and an ability to show strict adherence to one is a must for anyone wanting to go into journalism, copywriting, or basically anywhere you could write professionally.
- You will develop a good eye for captions and headlines as you ensure these are up to standard. You will be expected to communicate with section editors to replace headlines with better alternatives when necessary.
- You will be a key member of the Epigram team, with the opportunity to write articles and contribute to the section which you subedit.
- This year subeditors will also be expected to create social media posts for its section, which will be uploaded to Instagram. This involves using Canva – don’t worry if you have no idea what this is. We have a very simplistic Canva style guide to show you how to do this and once you do it a couple times it becomes an easy process.
- You will also have the opportunity to become familiar with InDesign and help your Editor to create the monthly print edition.
- This is a lighter job than other editorial roles, so is a great way to get stuck in with Epigram and add to your CV if you’re worried about balancing your role and your studies.
