With exam season in the not too distant past and a new year of stress headed our way, we should be honest, your brain is probably feeling like mush right now. Whether you’re recovering from sleepless nights in the ASS or a caffeine-fuelled academic grind, there’s no better time to unwind and let your brain rot in peace to a comforting film.

Instead of letting your frazzled brain spiral into an endless Netflix scroll, why not take a shortcut to relaxation? I’ve compiled a list of films that are perfect for easing you into a stressless bliss. From hilarious comedies to heartfelt dramas and sappy romcoms, these picks are designed to help you destress, recharge, and maybe even laugh at yourself a little.

So, grab a blanket, a sweet treat, and a housemate (or two) – it’s time to press play.

  1. Booksmart (2019) – Post-Uni Grind Relief

This hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age comedy is perfect for all those feeling like they've earned themselves a feral night out after months of studying. Follow Amy and Molly, our two overachiever protagonists, who realise they’ve spent far too much time in the library and not enough time partying and enjoying their life. Determined to make up for lost time, they embark on one wild night of partying before graduation, leading to a series of chaotic and heartfelt adventures. Sound familiar?

This one would be perfect to watch with your house after your own big post-exam night out as you can nurse your hangover and justify last night’s behaviour with “Well, at least I didn’t do that.”

  1. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) – Dreamy Escapism

If you’re feeling like life’s been all work and no play, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is the perfect antidote. This visually stunning and deeply inspiring film follows photo editor Walter Mitty, who spends most of his time daydreaming about exciting adventures he’s too timid to pursue.

When a crucial photograph for the magazine’s final issue goes missing, Walter is pushed out of his comfort zone and into a real-life adventure, and along the way, he rediscovers his courage, sense of wonder, and passion for life.

With its whimsical humour and uplifting message, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty reminds us of the importance of stepping outside our university routines and embracing the extraordinary moments life has to offer outside of exams. It’s the perfect film to gather your flatmates and take a breather from all-nighters in the library.

  1. Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) – Charm and Relatability

The perfect feel-good film for all uni students who have survived thus far and are in dire need of a laugh at life’s ups and downs.

Bridget Jones's Diary is a hilarious and relatable rom com that follows the life of Bridget, a 30-something single woman navigating love, work, and self-worth in London. Determined to take control of her life, she starts a diary to track her goals, only to find herself caught in a classic love triangle dilemma. Packed with awkward encounters, sharp wit, and heartfelt moments, it’s a feel-good classic that’s perfect for unwinding.

Besides, there’s no better way to feel about yourself and your assignments than watching someone else’s infinitely worse antics, like turning up to a formal event dressed as a Playboy bunny… Bridget’s misadventures are painfully relatable and hilariously endearing. You could even go the extra mile and turn the night into a Bridget Jones’s Diary marathon, especially ahead of the next instalment Mad About the Boy’s release.

  1. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

If you’re in the mood for something more inspiring, The Pursuit of Happyness is a must-watch. Based on the true story of Chris Gardner, this drama tells the story of a struggling salesman who, despite facing homelessness, never gives up on his dreams while raising his young son.

This film is a moving testament to resilience and hope, a perfect reminder that no matter how tough things seem, brighter days always lie ahead. It’s the perfect uplifting story to watch when you’re reflecting on the trials and tribulations of exam season.
