By 2025/26 Senior Editorial Team
Epigram needs you.
We’re hiring section editors and deputy editors, design and social media roles, and subeditors. We’re looking for ideas driven applications, so don’t worry about having experience - we’re the experience. If you’re at all interested in journalism, PR, social policy, music, art, photography, design and more, then Epigram wants you.
Whether you want to lead a section, dictate our grid, or you're looking for a lighter role that can still elevate your CV above the pack, a position in Epigram’s team might be right for you.
After completing our 36th year of print, we have enjoyed one of our most successful years to date. National coverage of our housing campaign, Break the Mould, a series of writing workshops and guest speakers, and even being – officially – recognised as the best student newspaper in the country.
This all means that the incoming editorial team have a brilliant opportunity to take all of last year’s hard work even further. We’re committed to giving everyone the opportunity they deserve, so please apply for next year’s editorial team here. Applications close at 23:59.59 on Sunday 15 June 2025.
We want to make sure Epigram is representing every student so, this year, we are especially keen for those from underrepresented backgrounds, particularly BAME, LGBTQ+, working class, and disabled students, to apply.
If you feel that none of these roles fit your specific skill set, but still want to apply, please contact us: getinvolved.epigram@gmail.com
New for 2025/26
Community
After the reintroduction of a puzzles page last year, we’ve realised newspapers don’t have to be huge chunks of text all the time. This new section/editor will continue the production of a puzzles page, but will also be given scope to embark on their own projects. Possibilities include introducing an agony column, where you could be your very own agony aunt/uncle, or creating Epigram horoscopes, where you can dictate your flatmates’ days. We also would like to see a reintroduction of an Epigram page from the 1990s - Epitome - essentially a ‘What’s On’ guide for students featuring gigs, club nights, student deals, and more.

Community Editor
You will be responsible and accountable for a number of different pages in print and articles/columns online. These will include the existing Epi-Games and ‘Overheard at UoB’ pages in print as well as encouragement from the Senior Team to reimagine other pages of the newspaper. You will be expected to work closely with the Senior and Design Team to see your projects to fruition.
Your role will be predominantly ideas driven. You must have a strong vision for what something might look like.
You will also need to have good communication and organisational skills as you commission writers, illustrators, and puzzlers for the projects under your remit.
If you have a particular interest in publishing, this role would be perfect for you.
Design team roles
These roles were introduced last year hoping they would help Epigram look as good as it reads. Following a complete redesign, we think last year’s team did just that. This is an exciting opportunity to take up the reins recently forged and push our visuals to the next level.
Lead Designer
As Lead Designer, you'll have a say on all our visual output. Leading the design team is a significant time commitment - you will need to be organised and reliable. This is a great role for getting to know all of the team as you will be working closely with the Senior Team and across every section of the paper. It’s an opportunity to see your work in print on a regular basis, build your portfolio and lead a small but mighty team.
Knowledge of Adobe’s Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, is desired, but not essential – if you are eager to learn we are more than happy to teach you. We are looking for initiative, creativity and dedication.
If you are interested in being part of the wider design team, we are hoping to build a team of resident designers and illustrators so please apply for this role and state a preference in your application. We are looking forward to seeing your portfolios!
Lead Photographer
You’ll be in charge of a team of resident photographers, responding to requests from section editors. You will have the opportunity to do some photojournalism, if you wish.
This year, we are really looking to diversify our storytelling and an enthusiastic photographer, with an eye for that conversation starting image, is what we’re looking for. (Reminder that there is also a photography category at the Student Publication Awards!)
If you are interested in being part of our resident photographers group instead, please apply for this role and state your preference in the application.
Social media roles
Social Media Producers
As a newspaper, it's essential that we're regularly posting relevant, high-quality snippets of stories to our social media channels.
Under the management of our Digital Editor, you will be independently creating content for Epigram’s official social media channels: Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn.
You will be required to respond to content requests from section editors as well as the Senior Editorial Team to create tailored content - including videos, infographics, photography, illustration, and graphic design.
This is a great opportunity for creatives to grow their portfolio and develop their skills in multiple areas across the digital media industry.
Familiarity with Canva or other digital editing tools is a plus, but not required – there will be plenty of opportunities to learn as you go.
Video Editors
Along with our usual Instagram carousels, this year we are looking to diversify our storytelling.
We are particularly interested in anyone who has experience producing short form media and video content for Instagram Reels or TikTok.
In this role, you’ll collaborate with our Digital Editor as well as individual section editors to bring their written stories to life, whilst also having the freedom to pitch and produce your own video-first content for Epigram’s official social media platforms.
This role is perfect for anyone who wants to go into broadcast journalism or social media journalism/marketing.
News
Being on the news team is a fast-paced and exciting job. You’ll have your finger on the pulse of campus life, uncovering interesting stories across our university and Bristol. It's not as intimidating as it sounds, we promise. If you love problem solving and thinking on your feet, this is the section for you.

News Editor
You will lead Epigram’s coverage of news and events, find stories, and cover breaking news as it happens. Whether this is a change in SU policy or a rise in the price of coffee, you need to be the first to know.
Your section will be expected to take on a lot of responsibility. You will be expected to publish at least five articles a week and you will work very closely with the Senior Team to ensure our news coverage stays relevant.
Your duties will include the layup of the section in print and making sure that there’s always someone covering important stories in a timely manner.
You will be expected to maintain a close relationship with both the University Press Office and SU Comms Manager and have a keen awareness of different aspects of university life.
You will be responsible for ensuring the News team runs effectively as well as being in communication with other editors and aware of what needs to be covered.
News Co-Deputy Editor (x2)
You will be required to cover and write news stories for Epigram and liaise with both the university and the SU.
You will be expected to keep an eye out for news stories across campus, eg. noticing a protest and covering this as it happens.
Your role will also include assisting the News Editor with editing and publishing articles, as well as the lay-up.
Investigations Editor
You will have the opportunity to dig into hidden stories around the university and the wider city of Bristol. Your focus will be on creating news and finding stories that other news outlets have not yet covered.
This role is distinct from breaking news: you will be afforded time to find a story, interview the relevant personnel, determine the facts, and write an article that will appeal to the student population.
You will be expected to liaise with the Features Editor to make sure that your coverage is not overlapping.
News Reporters
You will be responsible for handling press releases and writing up stories that relate to University of Bristol students.
You will also be expected to keep an eye out for news stories across campus, eg. noticing a protest and covering this as it happens.
You will contribute to the paper regularly, keeping in touch with both the News Editor and Senior Team.
Features
Features writers need to be all-rounders. To be on the Features team you need to be able to cover a wide range of issues and have a good eye for a story. You should be a proactive thinker who can think of that killer question. Features are in-depth pieces interested in the humans behind the headlines, so this section is perfect if you want to try your hand at some good old-fashioned investigating.

Features Editor
You will be responsible and accountable for the Features section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You’ll also have creative control over what sort of stories the section covers and how.
You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.
The Features section is one of Epigram’s most read and written for section. It can be a lot of work, but it is also rewarding - you have the opportunity to amplify overlooked voices and shape your peers’ conversations.
Your duties will include commissioning monthly on the Features writers’ group chat, the lay-up of the section in print, and you will also have the opportunity to edit and write narrative-style articles and conduct your own interviews.
Features Co-Deputy Editor (x2)
You will be responsible for helping the Features Editor produce the monthly editions in print and assisting with online coverage. This might include coming up with commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.
You will also have the opportunity to commission and write your own features.
Comment
We’re turning our Opinion section into a Comment section. We hope this section will become a place where a variety of different issues facing a variety of students on campus can be brought to the fore. Whether that is moaning about the lack of study spaces or offering a take on the big issues on campus, your role in the Comment team is to seek out a diverse range of people, viewpoints, and subject matter.

Comment Editor
You will be responsible and accountable for the Comment section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.
You will also be in charge of maintaining Epigram's balance of opinions – politically, socially, and economically. You will be chiefly responsible for determining which topics have relevance and relatability to the wider student community. You will be tasked to produce commissions for the Comment writers’ group chat every month.
We also want to see a range of tones this year, because no subject matter is too trivial. It will be your objective to balance the serious with the lighthearted and make sure that it always stays relevant to our readership.
Comment Deputy Editor
You will be responsible for helping the Comment editor produce the monthly editions in print and assisting with online coverage. This might include coming up with your own commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.
This role will help shape the direction of the Comment section and seek out minority and excluded student viewpoints to maintain a balance of opinion.
Arts
Arts is our most eclectic section. Covering everything from book recommendations to student theatre productions, being on the Arts team is a lot of fun. You'll have the chance to share your love for the arts with our readers, cover local events, and get involved with Bristol's thriving arts scene.

Arts Editor
You will be responsible and accountable for the Arts section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.
You will ensure coverage of the university and the city of Bristol’s artistic community. This will require liaising with drama and arts societies as well as local theatres, and distributing reviews and coverage among writers.
You must have a love for the arts, with a particular interest in student writing, theatre, or art.
Arts Deputy Editor
You will be responsible for helping the Arts Editor produce the monthly editions in print and assisting with online coverage. This might include coming up with your own commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.
You will work closely with writers and societies to ensure a wide coverage of local performances, primarily student-produced content.
Film & TV
Culture writing can be a lot of fun. Being on the Film & TV team means having access to the booming film industry in Bristol, from press passes to the Bristol Film Festival and being at the generous end of our successful partnership with Watershed Cinema.

Film & TV Editor
You will be responsible and accountable for the Film & TV section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.
You will also liaise with local cinemas, film-related events, and PR teams to distribute reviews and coverage among writers with a sharp and critical editorial eye to determine what is and isn’t relatable for the wider student population.
You should be a film fan, and have an interest in Bristol’s film scene, as well as student cinema.
Film & TV Deputy Editor
You will be responsible for helping the Film & TV Editor produce the monthly editions in print and assisting with online coverage. This might include coming up with your own commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.
You will work closely to ensure writers are covering a wide-range of Film and TV content, and are paying close attention to student-produced works. Examples of this could be interviews or behind-the-scenes with local or student filmmakers.
Music
Bristol has a diverse and vibrant music scene, and working in the music section of Epigram gives you exclusive access to it. You'll get dibs on concert passes and be the first to hear about exciting opportunities like artist interviews or album pre-release reviews. You’ll be expected to guide the section and ensure it is always student/Bristol focused, which means keeping an eye out for up and coming local artists.

Music Editor
You will be responsible and accountable for the Music section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.
You are expected to maintain strong relationships with local and regional press contacts that have been built by previous Music teams. In this, the Music Editor will request press and photography passes for Epigram’s Music writers too.
You will be able to attend concerts, write reviews, and interview artists for the section. Obviously, you need to love music. An interest in student-led music ventures is crucial too.
Music Deputy Editor
You will be responsible for helping the Music Editor produce the monthly editions in print and assisting with online coverage. This might include coming up with your own commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.
You will also be able to attend and review concerts and select which new music this section covers.
SciTech (Science and Technology)
In both the city of Bristol and the University of Bristol, groundbreaking research and entrepreneurial successes are happening every day. It’s your job to find the most exciting, relevant, and interesting stories happening right here on campus and make them accessible for everyone. If you’re ready to turn scientific breakthroughs and tech innovations into compelling stories, this role is for you.

SciTech Editor
You will be responsible and accountable for the SciTech section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.
You will ensure that content is focused on Bristol-based science and tech news, which may at times link to national and global developments.
You will have a talent for making complex topics accessible and exciting.
You will also be eager to seek out interviews with Bristol-based scientists, tech entrepreneurs, and people working in the gaming industry to be on top of breakthroughs as they happen. You must have a passion for making science accessible to all, not just those studying STEM.
SciTech Deputy Editor
You will be responsible for helping the SciTech Editor produce the monthly editions in print, and assisting with online coverage. This might include coming up with your own commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.
Your role will require a focus on researching local scientific and technological companies and building good relationships with these to provide coverage of new information.
Sport
There's more to university sports than Wednesday night socials. We keep readers up to date on the university’s sports teams’ successes and losses, as well as interviewing alumni who have gone on to be successful sportspeople.

Sport Editor
You will be responsible and accountable for the Sport section of Epigram and managing your individual team. You will be in charge of the overall vision for the section, both in print and online, and will work closely with the Senior Team to create the monthly newspaper.
You will lead your team in covering sporting events in-person and talk to athletes in order to create student-specific content. While university and campus activity should be your main focus, there is plenty of scope to cover local clubs and sports initiatives in Bristol as a whole. The role will also require organising and maintaining relationships with the University’s sports teams.
You might play a sport yourself, or maybe you're a huge fan of pickleball. We're looking for people with unique insight into the sporting world, particularly those who have played/kept up with university sports.
Sport Deputy Editor
You will be responsible for helping the Sport Editor produce the monthly editions in print and assisting with online coverage. This might include coming up with your own commissions, editing contributors’ articles, formatting articles for publication online, coming up with headlines, and more.
You’ll make sure that the section is regularly putting out high quality reports, opinion pieces, or interviews about all things sports.
Subeditors
Each section of Epigram has its own subeditor. Your role will be to ensure that your specific section’s print and online content reads with as few grammatical, spelling, and visual mistakes as possible.
You will be expected to have a keen eye for detail. Epigram’s style guide will be your bible, and an ability to show strict adherence to one is a must for anyone wanting to go into journalism, copywriting, or basically anywhere you could write professionally.
You will develop a good eye for captions and headlines as you ensure these are up to standard. You will be expected to communicate with section editors to replace headlines with better alternatives when necessary.
You will be a key member of the Epigram team, with the opportunity to write articles and contribute to the section which you subedit.
This is a lighter job than other editorial roles, so is a great way to get stuck in with Epigram and add to your CV if you’re worried about balancing your role and your studies.
If you feel that none of these roles fit your skills, don't hesitate to contact us with another idea!
