Student Community Organisers announced

New this year, Student Community Organisers will build liberation campaigns among the student body, connecting students across campus.

The 2025 Student Community Organisers are:

  • Sian Clarke is Disabled Students Communities Organiser
  • Shreya Viswanathan is Global Majority Communities Organiser
  • Lottie Shaw is LGBTQ+ Communities Organiser
  • Aimee Massara is Women’s Communities Organiser
  • Wendy Sun is first of two open positions as a community organiser 
  • Sandali Wickramasinghe is the final student community organiser taking the open position.

Louis Anscombe, re-elected Chair of Student Council, says 'I'm very excited to continue what I'm doing'

Louis Anscombe, incumbent Chair of Student Council, has been re-elected.

'I'm very excited to continue what I'm doing,' said Anscombe. 'Working with these new faces is going to be amazing, especially with the community organisers which is a new role. I’m very excited to see how this all works out.'

Anscombe said he would like to drastically improve democratic events.

'One of my ideas is getting community organisers and FTO’s involved in designing ideas and motions and policies for the SU through discussions,' said Anscombe. 'I would like to bring discussion and group working together as one organisation towards the common goal to improve student life'

Sharan Khemlani: 'It's incredibly surreal; I'm so grateful'

The Postgraduate Education Officer works to represent the personal and academic interests of Bristol's postgraduate students to university management.

Speaking to Epigram, Sharan Khemlani said her election was ‘surreal’ and that campaigning gave her ‘opportunities to connect with hundreds of students and really understand their needs and expectations.’

Khemlani's proposals include mitigating the financial burden for postgraduates and creating spaces for social connection.

'I look forward to working with the entire, incredible SU Team aswell as the other full time officers and supportive staff,' said Khemlani. 'I cannot wait to continue supporting the SU and continue their amazing work'

Aimee Massara: 'A lot needs to be improved'

According to newly elected Women's Communities Organiser, Aimee Massara, 'a lot needs to be improved'.

'We need to be recognised as actual people and we do deserve support from the university,' said Massara. 'People need to be treated less like stats and more like humans.'

Massara said she plans to set up peer support groups for women, and provide better education for staff on students on how to support women, too.

'University doesn't appreciate how isolating it is for students,' said Massara. 'This impacts students' day to day lives.'

Lovibond plans to 'build on what I've been doing all year'

Ella Lovibond, who has been re-elected as Sports and Student Development Officer said she is 'really grateful for everyone who voted.'

According to Lovibond, she will 'make sure it's worth it'.

Linlu Ye is ‘so excited to have won’

Linlu Ye, who has been re-elected as Equality, Liberation and Access Officer, said she is ‘so excited to have won’.

Ye also said that this year she plans to lobby university to work more to improve night time safety and tackle spiking, as well as continue expanding free period products and continue the gender expression fund.

'Pears still cares': Lucy Pears re-elected as Student Living Officer

'Specifically with the angry eyebrows,' said Pears.

Lucy Pears has been re-elected as Student Living Officer. This role represents student welfare interests – with a particular focus on wellbeing, housing and sustainability. 

This year, Pears provided Housing Advisors, £15,000 worth of laundry funding, and initiatives like free buses to exams and more free food available on campus.

'I've had a lovely time in the roles and I'm really looking forward to doing it again,' said Pears. 'The ball has been rolling; I'm excited to continue working on behalf of students.'

According to Pears, landlords should 'watch out'

Linlu Ye has been re-elected as Equality, Liberation and Access Officer

The Equality, Liberation and Access Officer represents and supports the interests of marginalised groups both within the SU and the University.

Ye has spent the last year of her tenure introducing a free period product trial, something she wishes to make permanent this year, as well as lobbying to improve mental wellbeing support.

Ella Lovibond is Sport and Student Development Officer

Ella Lovibond has been re-elected as Sports and Student Development Officer. The Sport and Student Development Officer represents the interests of students in regards to sport, exercise and health, promoting the importance of skills development and co-curricular activities.

Ella said her goal is ‘accessible sport for all.’ Her proposals include improving night safety and introducing more free women-only, LGBTQ+ and parasport sessions.

Of the four candidates running for Postgraduate Education Officer, Race Advocate and Course Representative for Economics, Finance, and Management, Sharan Khemlani, has won.

Mia Stevens is Undergraduate Education Officer

Mia Stevens has been re-elected as Undergraduate Education Officer.

The Undergraduate Education Officer is responsible for enhancing the undergraduate university experience. They work to improve both the academic and co-curricular student experience, ensuring the full representation of the diverse undergraduate body.

In an interview with Epigram, Stevens said it's ‘so nice to know students are still putting their trust’ in her. Speaking of her plans for next year, she said she wants more support for students in part-time employment and hopes to organise a part-time work fair next academic year.

International Students Officer announced as Jessie Yeung

Biology student, Jessie Yeung is announced as ISO. She will replace Bakhtawar Javed. Her proposals include:

  • Implementing visa support before, during and after university
  • Engaging with 'real’ financial support through Think Big and other bursaries
  • Helping soothe homesickness through more free cultural activities and specialised support.

Katie Poyner is Union Affairs Officer

Katier Poyner has been re-elected as Union Affairs Officer. The Union Affairs Officer ensures communication between students and the University, representing students’ interests to university management alongside supporting student societies.

In an interview with Epigram, Poyner said she was ‘thrilled’ with the results. She said that re-election will allow her to continue work on society forums, increasing study spaces and expanding social spaces in university residences.

Director of Impact and Influence, Cassie Agbehenu, declares the total number of voters at 9212: introduces full-time officers.

'I can confirm that these elections have been conducted in a fair and democratic format,' said Agbehenu. 'All successful candidates have been duly elected to their posts.'

Former International Students Officer, Bakhtawar Javed: 'I'm Bak, but I'll never be back again.'

Following Pilling, former International Students Officer, Bakhatawar Javed, has taken the stage to talk about her experience working for the SU, to great applause from everyone in the crowd.

According to Javed, her time at Bristol has been a 'rollercoaster ride'.

In her tenure as ISO, Javed launched the first ever dedicated coach service for international students from Heathrow, which over 500 students made use of.

Javed also secured more funding for the SU this coming year, as well as centralising international student support services.

'It's not an easy thing to put yourself out in front of thousands,' said Javed. '[Little did I know my hardships] would turn into something so beautiful.'

According to Javed, international students 'now feel empowered'.

'This is not just about training future leaders,' said Javed. '[It's about] instilling in them responsibility.'

Ben Pilling has taken the stage again to thank all candidates and SU staff ahead of tonight's announcements.

'It's a really huge achievement to stand up and be a voice for all students,' said Pilling

According to Pilling, every candidate has acted with 'confidence and creativity' in this year's elections.

'We've seen real energy from all the candidates this week,' said Pilling. 'Every one of you has done something really special.

'A good team has a huge impact on university in general'

According to Ben Pilling, Chief Executive of Bristol SU, it's a fantastic turnout this year.

'It's a lovely atmosphere and lovely to see many students engaged in student democracy,' said Pilling. 'It's a lovely atmosphere.'

With such a large turnout, roughly 29% of the student population, Pilling said that tonight it 'really special'.

'It means that student democracy at Bristol is thriving and does matter to people,' said Pilling. 'I'd like to say a huge thanks to all the candidates.'

More and more candidates are flowing into the SU living room as Student Union Chief Executive, Ben Pilling, has commenced this year's election night.

Welcome to election night 2025!

It's a record breaking night here in the Senate House, as a total of 9212 votes have been cast for in this year's Student Union election.

At stake tonight: seven full-time positions and a myriad of part-time and course representitive roles in your Student Union, each vote counting as a voice for real change in your everyday life as a student at UoB.

It's been a truly exciting season, with every candidate campaigning relentlessly to make their voice heard, and be the change they want to see.
