As Freshers' Week is fast approaching, and moving away from home feels closer (and possibly scarier) than ever, what better way to soundtrack your journey to halls than with some tear-jerking melodies and party-starting tracks to get the whole family in their feels.
From the Queen of Ireland (CMAT) to Bristol's best up-and-coming artists, this playlist should accompany a sufficient portion of your trip. Whether you're travelling by train, plane or squished in the back of your Dad's Vauxhall (speaking from experience), sit back, relax, and enjoy these last few moments before your university life begins!
Lord, Let That Tesla Crash - CMAT
With impeccable storytelling and an introduction that forces your eyes closed, ‘Lord, Let That Tesla Crash’ by CMAT explores the feelings of grief, loss, and the anger she felt after seeing a Tesla parked outside of her late friend's apartment. The genius in this song is one beyond comprehension and, in my opinion, opens up a huge realm of possibility for interpretation. This is a great one to think about what might change in your home once you've left, and to appreciate every new opportunity that comes your way in university.
What Am I Gonna Do On Sundays? - Olivia Dean
For an earlier presence in her discography, Olivia Dean's ‘What Am I Gonna Do On Sundays?’ really makes you think about the big things because, seriously, what are you gonna do on Sundays?
Slipping Through My Fingers - Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried
It may have been a little cruel to pick the MAMMA MIA! (2008) version for this one, sorry.
Sleep On the Floor - The Lumineers
With instructions as clear as the vodka that awaits you, pack yourself a toothbrush, dear. But not only that, take from this song that this year is a chance to make a few somewhat questionable decisions. You're only a fresher once!
Traffic Jam - Tamara Hendin
With her debut EP Festival releasing on the 26th of August, Tamara Hendin's discography is the perfect way to reflect, feel and relate to a fellow University of Bristol student about the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. In ‘Traffic Jam’ specifically, Hendin discusses the feeling of what she describes as being in a ‘rut’ and getting out of it, one that undoubtedly resonates with many students. After all, a traffic jam in Bristol is not a rare occurrence.
Where'd All The Time Go? - Dr. Dog
With nostalgia flooding out on every beat, this 2010 classic is sure to get you thinking, where did the last 18 years really go? Dr. Dog's four minutes of steady arpeggios and funky bass lines give you the perfect opportunity to stick your head out the window and let your hair run around in the wind.

Whilst of course, this is a love song (it's Michael Bublé), ‘Haven't Met You Yet’ is without question applicable to your first year at university. Whether you're in the midst of Instagram small-talk or you're going in completely blind, your first year flatmates, course mates and society peers may be some of your best friends for life, so bask in these last few moments of uncertainty.
Dear Jean - Loyle Carner
As part of his second album Not Waving, But Drowning, the opening track ‘Dear Jean’ details how Carner felt when moving out of home and leaving his mum. This one is a stand out in this playlist for me, as not only do the lyrics perfectly capture the guilt and sorrow that come with moving out, but the album also features his mum's response to the song in the closing track ‘Dear Ben’, which rounds off the album in a perfect full circle.
Where Are We Going? - Marvin Gaye
Using his music as an outlet to speak up on his political beliefs, Gaye's ‘Where Are We Going?’ was a chance for him to outwardly question the future of America whilst exploring his funk and R&B style. Interviewer David Ritz described him as having ‘the unique talent of turning the listener into a confidante’, which makes the song feel like home. I have no doubt the whole family will love this one.
God Only Knows - The Beach Boys
Finally, a classic that's guaranteed to put you in a good mood.
