There were plenty of surprises at the awards ceremony on January 6, and the winners give little indication of who will be victorious at the Oscars on February 24.
The Golden Globes winners, announced late last night, are quite astonishing. Baffling, really. At 9/2, Bohemian Rhapsody had the equal longest odds of winning the most significant award of the night, ‘Best Motion Picture - Drama’, yet it trumped early favourites A Star Is Born and BlacKkKlansman to scoop the biggest headline of the night. Rami Malek also won ‘Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama’ to claim the double.
British actress Olivia Colman won ‘Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy’ for her raucous performance as Queen Anne in The Favourite, putting her up against fellow Globes winner Glenn Close for the main award at the Oscars. Close, here winning for her role in The Wife, will be hoping for a first Oscar win having previously been nominated six times previously. Lady Gaga can also still be viewed as a key contender for the award, despite missing out last night.
In a ceremony celebrating its own diversity - ‘I wanted to be here to look out into this audience and witness this moment of change,’ co-host, and winner herself, Sandra Oh said. ‘And I’m not fooling myself. Next year it could be different.’ - Regina King and Mahershala Ali won their respective awards for supporting roles in If Beale Street Could Talk and Green Book. In her speech, King hailed the start of ‘Times Up time two’ and pledged to only work on projects with 50 per cent female involvement. ‘Anyone out there who is in a position of power, not just in our industry or other industries, I challenge you to do the same,’ she said.
Elsewhere, Alfonso Cuarón won ‘Best Director - Motion Picture’ for his Netflix production Roma, which also won ‘Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language’. The film is still second favourite for a historic Oscar, where it could be the first foreign language and Netflix film to win Best Picture. The Mexican drama missed out on a Globes nomination in the key category which saw Bohemian Rhapsody take centre stage.
