Zack Coughlan, 23, appeared in Bristol Magistrates Court today (April 14) charged with murder, having been arrested on April 12.

Jamie Collins studied robotics at the University of West England, and was an ‘active member of student societies’, according to UWE.

Emergency services found his body in the early hours of April 9 on Cleve Road, Filton - half an hour’s walk from UWE's Frenchay campus.

The body was found with ‘a number’ of stab wounds, and police added that he had likely died hours earlier.

Zack Coughlan, accused of murder, spoke in Bristol Magistrates Court only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

Coughlan is also a student at the University of West England, and according to Avon and Somerset Police he lived with Jamie Collins at the property in which the body was found.

He has been remanded in custody and denied bail ahead of another court appearance tomorrow.

Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Edgeworth, of the Major Crime Investigation Team said that specially trained officers are supporting Jamie’s family during this ‘hugely difficult time’ and asked people to respect their privacy.

Further police enquiries around Cleve Road are planned over the coming days. A significant police and forensic officer presence remains in the area today, reports Bristol Live.

The University of West England said in a statement to Epigram that they are ‘deeply shocked’ by the death of Jamie, and that their thoughts are with his family.

‘As well as studying robotics, Jamie was also an active member of student societies at UWE Bristol.’

‘The university will support students who studied with Jamie and staff directly affected by his death.’
