Are you single? Not a fan of the traditional dinner date? Or, do you just dislike Valentine’s Day in general? Well, here are a few Bristol-based suggestions to mix up your traditional Valentine’s Day and hopefully make it more enjoyable!
Takeaway and a film
Sometimes it is best to hide from the Valentine’s Day ‘bleurgh’ (quote by my housemate) by ordering a takeaway and scrolling through Netflix. If all the Deliveroo drivers are out on dates then why not create an indoor picnic of all your favourite foods. It’s a great way to avoid what many would consider a grossly commercialised day, to relax, and to save money. You could even bring out the board games.
Group activities
Head down to the city centre and throw it all the way back to your 10th birthday party with a few games of laser-tag. Prices range from £6.50 for one game, £10.99 for two games and £12.99 for three (and if you’re left wanting more, extra games are just £2). If not, you can try out the escape rooms at LockedInARoom Bristol, or go for the typical date activity of mini-golf at Jungle Rumble in Cabot Circus.
Speed Dating
Tired of being single? Put down the faceless dating apps and give good old-fashioned speed dating a try! Go with a group of friends or pluck up the courage to brave it alone at one of the many speed-dating events happening across Bristol. Browns Bar & Brasserie are offering tickets for just £15, from 8-10pm (minimum age of 21), Rough Trade are offering a less intense way to meet new people with their ‘Float your Boat’ night, designed to be a chilled evening listening to great music and chatting to whoever you want, also for just £15.
Flower Bouquet Workshop
Why not learn a new skill this Valentine’s Day? Natalie Lauraine Floral Design on Clare Street is offering a two-hour masterclass on making seasonal bouquets. It does cost £28 which may put students off, but that includes two drinks and a selection of canapes! If you think about it, that is the cost of dinner and a few drinks, but here you are picking up a new hobby at the same time! This is for all the single girls out there, as Lauraine argues that you “don’t need no man to have a good valentine”!

Life-drawing
If none of these suggestions take your fancy Sundial Kitchen are offering an ‘Anti-Valentine’s dinner’ evening comprising of life-drawing and food, on the 14th. Although it is a little far away in Bedminster, it is just a short bus journey away and tickets are £20 and include your art materials and a vegan dinner. This isn’t just for singletons – couples, individuals or groups are all invited to explore their creativity and meet new people!
