Previously, only incoming students with ‘exceptional ability’ in music, sports and drama were eligible for the scholarship, worth over one and a half thousand pounds.

The University of Bristol's Music Department has announced that the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship will now be open to current students as well as prospective students.

The scholarship supports students who are ‘outstanding’ within their field, and is also available for students talented in drama and sports. If achieved, the recipient would receive an award of £1,552 in three instalments over the year, which is open to renewal.

Previously, only those intending to study at the University of Bristol in the next academic year could apply. Now, this opportunity has been opened to current undergraduates too.

According to the Music Department, the scholarship is designed to allow students to ‘hone your talent and maintain your dedication to your craft.’

The scholarship is open to students from all academic disciplines, not just those studying music or sport. However, students who are temporarily studying at the University of Bristol from another institution, or those who are planning to study abroad that year, are not eligible.

You are also ineligible as an incoming first-year student if you mark Bristol as your UCAS insurance choice.

Georgie Twigg, an Olympic gold medallist in field hockey and an alumni of the University of Bristol’s Law Department, was a recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship.

Georgie told the University that, ‘Receiving a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship was a massive honour, and it gave me access to a whole range of services which allowed me to maintain an intensive training regime while continuing my studies.’

What does the suspension of music courses at university mean for the future of the Arts?
‘None of this is a music, or arts, or humanities specific issue, but instead, a symptom of an already flawed system.’

There are some high expectations required to apply for the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship, however.

For the music scholarship, for instance, at least a Grade 8 is required and evidence of musical distinction must be demonstrated.

Other universities in the UK, such as Durham University, offer similar scholarships for talented students, but only for prospective students. So, this change opens up a welcome opportunity for current Bristol students who may not have been aware of the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship prior to starting their studies.
