Francesca Frankis reflects upon the artistry of Her's following the tragic news of their death this week.
Liverpool based band Her’s, consisting of Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading have died along with their tour manager Trevor Engelbrekston in a tragic road accident, whilst on their second tour in the US. In a statement released on Facebook yesterday, their label Heist or Hit confirmed the death of the duo as they were on their way to a gig in Santa Ana, California; ‘Their energy, vibrancy and talent came to define our label. As humans, they were warm, gentle and hilarious’.

Having met each other when studying at the Liverpool Institute of Preforming Arts, and graduating a few years ago, the pair had been described as bonding ‘over a love of peculiar, sardonic humour and wide eyed observations’. Her’s had released their second album ‘An Invitation to Her’s’ just last August, off the back of the success of their first album ‘Songs of Her’s’ in 2017. Perhaps best well known for their tracks like ‘Cool with You’ and the satisfying ‘What Once Was’, which gained them prominence and let them make their first impression in the indie scene back in 2016.
What is self evident in their music, is that the duo had some kind of unique musical chemistry with one another which allowed them to create perfectly balanced records, adding an offbeat avenue to the British indie music world. Their tracks matched heady guitar parts, synths and deep vocals that were technically advanced, whilst still maintaining a level of ‘care freeness’ that permeated throughout their records.

Having managed to catch Her’s last April at the Louisiana, it is impossible to deny the sheer energy of their performance and the love both Fitzpatrick and Laading shared for their craft. Her’s were individual and distinctive in their approach and their sound. It is extremely sad that two young up and coming musicians had their careers and lives cut short so suddenly. In their short but flourishing career, the duo proved themselves as some of the most authentic sound to come out of the indie scene in the last few years and they certainly won’t be forgotten.
