KASK² opens on Cheltenham Road

Impress a date or take your mum – if you're looking for the best new spot to indulge in great wine, KASK² is it.

By Julia Mullins, Co Editor-in-Chief

Following the success of KASK in Bedminster, which first opened six years ago, the team behind the award-winning wine bar have headed to 243 Cheltenham Road for their next venture – KASK².

Dedicated to organic, low-intervention wine, KASK are passionate about bringing the best of the best to Bristol. KASK are arguably the trendsetters for the rise in popularity of wine bars in Bristol over the last few years.

As a student, the luxury of good wine is typically reserved for Christmas, weddings and if someone is really trying to impress you – unfortunately these occasions are few and far between. However, KASK are committed to ‘Saying No To Sh*t Wine’ and boast what they’re calling ‘the most exciting wine list in the South West.’

Before they open on the 2nd of October Epigram was invited down to their preview night to find out what all the fuss is about – and as any good journalist would do, have a glass or two.

On arrival we were greeted by KASK’s most important employee – Indy the dog. Whose role, according to their website, is ‘The Boss’.

Epigram spoke to co-founder, Charlie Taylor, to hear more about the vision for KASK² and what he plans to offer students.

Charlie told Epigram that if KASK is the little bar you stumble upon in Marseille, KASK² is its Parisian counterpart. Louder and larger than the OG, it’s certainly right at home beside the character of Gloucester Road.

With DJ decks behind the bar playing trip-hop Bristol classics like Portishead and Massive Attack, and kitted out with a piano and small stage, you can trust KASK is prepared to soundtrack your evening.

If what they say about natural wine is true, you might skip the hangover and make your 9am. While the quality of KASK is sky-high, the prices aren’t. Glasses range, roughly, from £6 to £15. With a selection of wine on tap, KASK offers ‘better pours at better prices.’ Charlie told us he plans to offer a student discount and on Sundays serve wine to drink-in at take-home prices.

Charlie spoke about the important relationship KASK has with its suppliers, all of whom he meets in-person on his travels or at conventions. It’s not just the co-founder who is so passionate about wine either, all of the staff are eager to answer any questions and tell you more about what you’re drinking.

If wine isn't your thing – fear not – they have locally sourced beer and cider, plus a cocktail list inspired by the classics but with genius wine twists. Their martini, made in collaboration, features Spirit of Bristol’s very own gin.

All that should be enough to convince you that next time you're looking to go somewhere nicer than spoons, KASK² is it.
