Indoor UoB sports facilities reopen with new safety measures

By Eddie McAteer, Sports Editor

The University’s indoor sports facilities, including the gym and indoor tennis courts, have reopened with safety measures today following confirmation of their Covid-19 secure certificate.

Access to the gym and indoor tennis courts is now permitted, but multiple precautions are being taken to maintain the safety of everyone using the gym.

Members of the gym will only be able to attend if they have booked online and they can also book sessions with personal trainers.

Additional precautions include:

- Queueing outside before booked time

- Online payments only

- A sign-posted one-way system

- Mandatory wearing of face masks inside building (optional during the workout)

- Changing facilities remaining closed

- No water machines

- Wipes to clean equipment

- Hand sanitiser around the building

- A maximum of one hour in the gym

The announcement comes after the University's decision to refurbish the swimming pool, which will therefore remain closed despite government guidelines allowing pools to re-open.

The refurbishment will make the water circulation system more efficient and use less chemicals in an effort to reduce the pool’s carbon footprint.

Work on the swimming pool is expected to be finished by September or October and will cost around £300,000.
