Fresh from a world tour including dates in the USA and the Netherlands, 'slacker punkers' Bull are back in the UK ahead of their gig at the Old England on Wednesday 3 April. Joe Gorecki previews.
Despite their slacker rock-inspired sound, it’s hard to call Bull exactly laid-back. The York-based ‘slacker punkers'’ harmony-rich poppy vibes often break down, warping into the frenetic heavy rhythms of punk and back again. But while they might not always be relaxed, they make up for this by keeping the listeners constantly on their toes and always invested. After a busy year touring around the world, they’re back in the UK and they’ll be bringing this genre-bending slacker punk along to their gig at the Old England on Wednesday 3 March.
The band made the news last year after their vintage American school-bus broke down while on the way to South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, with fans raising over £1700 in under 24 hours to keep their US tour going. The group have developed a strong following in the Netherlands, having already played Amsterdam’s legendary Paradiso and been featured on the national 3Voor12 alternative radio programme.
They’re now hoping to replicate their international success in the UK and will be appearing at the Old England at a show put on by local promoters and label Pink Ink and supported by local Bristol punk band Football F.C. (formerly known as Girly World). Also supporting them will be Denh Izen, whose brooding low-fi indie is drenched in atmosphere. Bull’s gig will be a night for those after either indie or punk – or something in between.
