Bristol University was one of only 12 UK universities to improve their performance in the rankings.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2020, the University of Bristol has ranked 49th in the world, rising two places from last year.

The rankings, which analyse the world's top 1,000 universities across 85 countries, also placed Bristol 9th in United Kingdom and 11th in Europe.

Of the six indicators used to compile the rankings Bristol improved in three: academic reputation, the proportion of international staff and the proportion of international students. It's highest ranking indicator was for the University's reputation with employers around the world.

The QS World Rankings do not use student satisfaction as one of their six indicators.

Of the 84 UK universities ranked, Bristol is one of 12 who have improved their performance, while 50 universities have fallen in the rankings.

The University of Cambridge dropped to 7th in the world, it's lowest position since 2012, while the University of Warwick fell to 62nd and the University of Durham 78th worldwide.

Professor Hugh Brady, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol, said that he was 'delighted' that Bristol was ranked within the world's top 50 universities.

He said: 'All our staff work extremely hard to deliver world-class research and teaching, so it's fantastic to see this rewarded. I was particularly pleased to see how highly-regarded we are by top employers, which is testament to our exceptional students.'
