The attack occurred at a flat in Hartcliffe, south Bristol on Wednesday evening. Both police and paramedics attended the scene, with neighbours describing a large emergency response. The young woman, who has been named as Morgan Dorsett died at the scene. Two people were arrested following the incident and were held on suspicion of offences under the Dangerous Dogs Act, including owning a banned breed. They have since been released on conditional bail.
The dog was seized and sedated, and will be assessed by veterinary experts. Police have not confirmed the breed.
In a statement Neighbourhood Inspector Terry Murphy said:
‘Our thoughts, first and foremost, are with the family of the young woman who’s tragically died as a result of yesterday evening’s incident.’
Thanking the emergency responders who attended the scene, Murphy said there will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days.
‘A full investigation is now well underway to establish the full circumstances of the events that led to her death.’
Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact Avon and Somerset Police.
The Dangerous Dogs Act came into effect in 1991 with the goal of reducing dog attacks. Certain dog breeds are restricted under the act and it is against the law to allow a dog to be dangerously out of control anywhere. In 2014 maximum prison sentences for dog attacks were increased. Owners can face up to 14 years in prison if their dog kills someone.
