Society Spotlight | Sustainable Innovation Society: where ambition meets collaboration and ethical innovation

Disha Angadi introduces the Sustainable Innovation Society, a society focused on working through sustainability challenges and cross-cultural collaboration.

By Disha Angadi, First Year, Law

During a trip back home, Aras realised that many people around him, doing different degrees, and hailing from diverse backgrounds, shared a real interest in sustainability. Furthermore, what stood out was how everybody approached the same concept from different viewpoints. It made him realize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the development of sustainable solutions that have a net-positive impact on society. That’s why, he pushed towards establishing the Sustainable Innovation Society, based in the University of Bristol, but with branches in different UK universities.

After returning to University, Aras realized that innovative solutions often remained within individual disciplines, therefore, he pushed towards creating a committee composed of people all pursuing a wide array of degrees. Since launching, the society has reached out to companies and institutions working on sustainability to collaborate with them on projects such as B-Corp certification and case studies.

What makes our society unique is its interdisciplinary approach shared between different universities. Sustainability challenges do not belong to a single field, and meaningful solutions can only emerge when collaboration happens. By connecting driven students from different degrees, the society aims to encourage creative thinking and paradigm-shifting results. Ultimately, our goal is to turn ideas into positive change.

Presided over by Aras Aksoy, with Dwija Kishorekumar acting as secretary; the society aims to produce trailblazing projects through collaboration across universities, cultures and individuals. We are not just a society but a movement towards more realistic, interdisciplinary sustainability initiatives powered through key industry partnerships and immersive events such as keynote talks, Hackathons, Intervarsity projects and Fundraisers. All these efforts culminate into a year-end competition specifically created to find the optimal solution to pressing sustainability issues.

Potential partnerships include arenas like Consulting, Finance, Research and Sustainable Engineering.

Diversity

Our strength lies in our diversity. We hope to collaborate with students across different universities, disciplines, and cultures to create ground-breaking projects born out of a unique blend of backgrounds, ideas and concentrated hard work.
