OSCARS LIVE 2025

Live Reporting from Felix Glanville, Second Year, History

Good Evening and welcome to Epigram's LIVE coverage of the 97th Academy Awards. This awards seasons has been full of everything, from Emilia Perez's online annihilation to pope-mania, nothing can be certain for tonight. American late-night talk show legend Conan O'Brien is hosting and is sure to be a treat, his versatile comedy will surely act as a much needed change to Jimmy Kimmel's rather flat hosting duties of previous years. Brace yourself for some outlandish outfits, questionable speeches, and a best picture winner that still cannot be totally predicted. All is to play for tonight in Hollywood's biggest awards.

Most recent updates will be appearing at the top of the page.

03:48- The Oscars comes to a close, what an evening of shocks and brilliant surprises. Thank you all for joining me this evening, it has been a pleasure and a great thrill seeing Anora rise to the top, as Emilia Perez slowly sank to the bottom from its barrage of nominations. A brilliant 97th Academy Awards, and I hope to do all the same next year!
03:44- ANORA WINS BEST PICTURE. A VICTORIOUS NIGHT WINNING 5 AWARDS. BEATING THE FAVOURITES CONCLAVE AND THE BRUTALIST. HUGE!
03:41- ITS TIME FOR BEST PICTURE. ANORA? THE BRUTALIST? CONCLAVE? HECK, EVEN WICKED? LETS FIND OUT.
03:38- MIKEY MADISON WINS BEST ACTRESS FOR ANORA. Beating Demi Moore to victory, and a hugely deserving win for the highly talented actress.
03:36- Emma Stone presents BEST ACTRESS. Our nominees are Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofia Gascon, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, and Fernanda Tores. A Madison v. Moore showdown is in play.
03:35- The current leaderboard as it stands before our final two awards: Anora is tied with The Brutalist at 3 wins, with Wicked, Emilia Perez, and Dune 2 tied at 2 wins following closely behind.
03:30- SEAN BAKER WINS BEST DIRECTING. A surprise win for Baker, beating the favourite Corbet!
03:29- Time for BEST DIRECTING. Our nominees are: Sean Baker for Anora, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, and Coralie Fargeat for The Substance.
03:27- Adrien Brody asks the band to stop the playoff music during his speech, becoming a rather lengthy Oscar speech. A pretentious move as this is 'not his first rodeo'.

03:22- ADRIEN BRODY WINS BEST ACTOR FOR THE BRUTALIST. This is Brody's second win, following The Pianist. I thought Chalamet could just edge Brody here, but was painfully wrong.
03:19- BIG TIME FOR BEST ACTOR NOW. The tension is unbelievable. To remind you our nominees are: Adrien Brody, Timothee Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, and Sebastian Stan. This is genuinely anyones game.
03:12- Queen Latifah is performing with a mirage of students, appearing to mimic the student uniform seen in Wicked, very fitting.
03:06- THE BRUTALIST WINS ORIGINAL SCORE. The first Oscar win and nomination for Daniel Blumberg, richly deserved. I recommend listening to the soundtrack during intense essay writing, you will feel powerful.
03:05- ORIGINAL SCORE now, one of my personal favourite categories. The Brutalist is creeping for a third win.
02:57- I'M STILL HERE WINS BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE. This was a brilliant surprise tonight. It seemed Emilia Perez had this in the bag, but now this adds some extra spice for the Best Actress race. Do not discount Fernanda Torres.
02:56- The award for BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE.

02:55- THE BRUTALIST WINS FOR BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY. The first win for The Brutalist tonight, a sign for its best picture hopes? Possibly.
02:51- Time for BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY, a highly prized award. The nominees are The Brutalist, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Maria, and Nosferatu.
02:49- 7 OSCARS TO GO! We are now entering the tense part of the evening, Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress is anyones game.
02:44- The In Memorium segment of the evening, despite the rather gothic music, a beautifully conducted sequence with Morgan Freeman delivering some fittingly emotional words.
02:38- IM NOT A ROBOT WINS BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT.

02:33- A roundup of the evenings winners, courtesy of ITV's Live coverage (see above).
02:31- DUNE 2 WINS BEST VISUAL EFFECTS. Again, hard to hide my love for this film here, but this sci-fi legend needed another win in its belt, especially after its directing snub. Brilliant.
02:30- Time for BEST VISUAL EFFECTS.
02:27- DUNE 2 WINS BEST SOUND. This is a hugely deserving win for Dune 2, and could be the only win this evening for Denis Villeneuve's masterpiece.
02:26- Miles Teller and Miley Cyrus present the award for BEST SOUND. Dune 2 and A Complete Unknown seem the favourites for this award.
No Other Land/ Image Courtesy of Variety.
02:13- NO OTHER LAND WINS BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE. This documentary highlights the West Bank's Masafer Yatta, a community ravaged by the Israel-Palestine war, a deeply contemporary and necessary win.
02:11- THE ONLY GIRL IN THE ORCHESTRA WINS BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT.
02:10- Samuel L. Jackson and Selena Gomez present BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT.
02:02- EMILIA PEREZ WINS BEST ORIGINAL SONG FOR 'EL MAL'. Emilia Perez is now tied with Wicked at two Oscar awards, the battle of the musicals continues. The winners began singing 'Emilia' over and over again as the play-off music played, rather strange, but that is Emilia Perez for you.
01:58- Mick Jaggar presents the award for BEST ORIGINAL SONG.
01:56- WICKED WINS FOR BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN. Another win for the box office hit. From the acres of real tulips to the ornate Shiz Univeristy, this is a thoroughly deserving win.
01:54- Award for BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN, presented by Ben Stiller.

01:45- ZOE SALDANA WINS BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS. A clean sweep for Saldana in the major awards.
01:43- Time for BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS. A hugely competitive award. The nominees are: Monica Barbaro, Ariana Grande, Felicity Jones, Isabella Rossellini, and Zoe Saldaña. Zoe Saldana is the favourite here picking up the SAG, BAFTA and Golden Globe this award season.

01:41- ANORA WINS FOR BEST FILM EDITING. A Second Oscar for Sean Baker!
01:39- AWARD FOR BEST FILM EDITING. The nominees are: Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, and Wicked.
01:33- A brilliant Bond medley comes to a close, but surely a missed opportunity to reveal the new bond.
01:32- Raye is singing the absolute Bond staple, 'Skyfall'. The modern Amy Winehouse is proving her musical talent even further this year.
01:29- Doja Cat has now emerged singing Shirley Bassey's 'Diamonds are Forever', who would have thought this in 2025.
01:27- A bond medley is gracing our screens, could this end with a new Bond actor reveal?
Demi Moore in The Substance/ Image Courtesy of Los Angeles Times
01:23- THE SUBSTANCE WINS BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING. This horror was the clear front runner for this award, from creepy prosthetics to Demi Moore's grotesque transformation.
01:21- Time for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The nominees are: A Different Man, Emilia Pérez, Nosferatu, The Substance, and Wicked.
01:12- CONCLAVE WINS FOR BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY. Based on Robert Harris' historical drama book, proves that history at the Oscars continues to be highly successful, much like Oppenheimer.
01:09- ANORA WINS FOR BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY. This is Sean Baker's first win, and at his current career trajectory will certainly not be his last.
01:07- Time for Best Original Screenplay. The favourite seems to be A Real Pain, but Anora and the Brutalist could swipe this script centred award.
Wicked Wins Best Costume Design/Image Courtesy of Universal Pictures
00:58- WICKED WINS BEST COSTUME DESIGN! Sorry to be biased, but absolutely deserved, from the flying monkeys to Glinda's lavish range of pink dresses, Wicked is a feast of costume colour.
00:51- BEST COSTUME DESIGN. A hugely competitive field between Wicked and Nosferatu! Bowen Yang has entered in full Shiz University attire from Wicked, good comic number.
00:43- IN THE SHADOW OF THE CYPRESS WINS BEST ANIMATED SHORT.
00:42- FLOW WINS BEST ANIMATED FEATURE. A victory for the cat lovers!

00:30- KIERAN CULKIN WINS FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR.
00:28- BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR. Robert Downey Jr is here to present the award, the nominees are: Yura Borisov, Kieran Culkin, Edward Norton, Guy Pearce, and Jeremy Strong. Culkin seems to be the favourite.
00:27- The sandworm from Dune 2 is now playing the piano, we seem to have got to a fever dream segment of the monologue.
00:23- Adam Sandler has rocked up in his usual hoodie attire, bringing some much needed comedy in this rather shaky monologue, unfortunately he didn't grace our screens for that long. O'Brien just seems to be constantly screaming down the microphone.
00:15- Our first AI reference of the evening by Conan O' Brien, add that on the bingo card. Brien also packed a punch with a reference to Sofia Karla Gascon's tweets, now that was unexpected and brave.
00:07- Cynthia Erivo has taken the stage, and 'Defying Gravity' has entered our earbuds, what an absolute winner that was, cementing Wicked's place as this year's cinematic event of the year.
00:02- Opening with Ariana Grande singing 'Over the Rainbow' was not on my bingo card, but a well needed start. That microphone is certainly on!
23:27- We are LIVE! The stars behind and in front of the camera are arriving on the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Anticipation is building.
