La lutte gronde, elle ne fait que commencer (The Struggle is Rumbling, It's Just Beginning)

In this photo essay, Suzanne Célérier captures the 17th of October protests in France, that rose after weeks of youth-led demonstrations facing French authorities.

The thousands of people gathered across France on the 17th of October 2026, have proved that humanity remains restless. Police violence cases, looting, and escalations in clashes became prominent features of the day. However, there was another side to the struggle - of people writing ever-more cheerful slogans on placards, forming brass bands, and even lighting smoke flares to serve as the beacon for the struggle - is what I chose to photograph.

I explored the editing process by playing with shadow, contrast, luminance, and expirementing with my B&W camera filter. What I took away from this struggle, and what my work aims to evoke, is that even though the sturggle has grown dark in “le pays des lumières” (the land of light) the streets continue to shine bright.
