Spooky slays - how to look fierce and fearful with these Halloween makeup looks

By Kirstyn Evans, Third Year English

The Croft Magazine // With Covid-19, spooky season will be slightly different this year - but that doesn't mean we can't dress up for the living room, right? Whether you're a makeup pro or novice, these looks will ensure you are the scariest thing sitting on your sofa.

If you are just starting out with makeup, probably the most daunting thing to learn is eyeliner. What better time to practice your bat wings than Halloween though? If you're new to the eyeliner scene, then stick to something simple like a spider's web - it sounds difficult, but as long as you can draw a straight line, there is nothing to worry about.

'Halloween spiderweb eyeliner + glitter lips' - @strwbrrypunk/YouTube

An easy YouTube tutorial to follow is @strwbrrypunk's spiderweb eyeliner and glitter lips video as she shows the whole process from start to finish. In the video she uses the Expert Liquid Liner from E.l.f Cosmetics, which is only £3 on their website! However, if you aren't as skilled in the eyeliner department, you might want to start with a gel liner as they don't dry as fast as liquid, allowing time for clean-up. E.l.f's Cream Eyeliner is £4.50, and their brushes range from £1-6 depending on the shape you want.

'Quick and easy last minute Halloween makeup looks - Pennywise, skull & more' - Hannah Renée/YouTube

Already mastered eyeliner? Go full-glam with Hannah Renée's three-part tutorial that ranges in difficulty from easy to intermediate. Here she shows you how to create a skeleton, a vampire and a Pennywise-inspired look using eyeshadows, eye liners and lip liners. Hannah uses MAC lipliners to create her Pennywise-inspired look, but these retail for £15 each (and she uses two different red shades in her video!) NYX's Suede Matte Lip Liner is a great alternative at £4 each on Cult Beauty, and I'd recommend the shades Cherry Skies and Kitten Heels for this look.

As for the skeleton, the E.l.f gel liner mentioned earlier would work perfectly for completing this look - all that's needed are some black and grey eyeshadows. The Morphe 9W Smoke and Shadow Artistry Palette is £12 for nine shades, and the easy blend formula will ensure your skeleton look is to die for.

This palette can also be used for the vampire look so it's a purchase with multiple uses. However, to channel your inner Damon Salvatore, you will need a grey-toned contour to hollow out your cheeks. A pricier purchase at £38, the KVD Vegan Beauty Shade & Light palette has possibly the best grey-toned contour on the market. This can however be bought in Boots with a 10 per cent student discount to help you out - you can't go wrong! To ensure that blood-thirsty look, use purple and red shades for the eyeshadow, in addition to underneath the eyes, and of course, a matching lip to complete the look.

So there you have it, whether ready to sit on the sofa or on a bench at Lakota, you now have all you need to ensure you are the most fearful thing to be seen.

What spooky and creative looks will you be trying out this Halloween?
