Ode to... the Trench Coat
Joanna Turvill gives us her guide to trench coats: the hottest outerwear of AW18 that is both chic and super wearable.
With October officially upon us it’s sadly coming to that time of year to say our last farewells to the summer sun.
With this in mind, it’s time to make investing in a winter woolly and a staple cover up a priority, and look no further than this season’s must-have, the infamous trench coat.
Suiting all genders, the trench coat is coined as an essential item everyone should own at some point in their lifetime. It has returned once more to solve our everlasting problem of finding the perfect waterproof coat that combines both practicality and effortless sophistication. It’s the ultimate Granddad-chic.

Anyone can pull off a trench as it goes with just about everything. You can dress it down paired with trainers and multiple layers - to shield you from the cold winter days to come - or dress it up with whatever you like in the evening. Even on a lazy day just throw on a trench coat to cover up an outfit (or pyjamas) and you’ll still look stylish without even having to try.
Despite the trench coat being a central item of Burberry, there’s a wide range to choose from in high street shops. Most of which are within a student friendly budget that won’t cost you your whole student loan.
Everyone’s taste is met with the all-new contemporary takes on the trench. Take inspiration from everyone’s style crush, Alexa Chung, and become your sassier self with her unique take on the trench.

If you can’t stand the thought of hiding your outfit underneath, no problem! Why not try a transparency style?

Or go bright and bold with a green or cobalt blue to stand out on even the gloomiest of autumn days.
However, if you just want to keep it simple, Zara and ASOS are shoo-ins for the ultimate revamps of the ‘Burberry beige’ and other tranquil colours.
