University gym to run women-only sessions from 14 April

Bristol University’s gym will be running women-only sessions on Wednesday afternoons as of next week.

The sessions will aim to create a safe, supportive and motivational workout space for anyone who self-identifies as female.

Following conversations between the SU Women’s Network, Sport and Student Development officer Rushab Shah and Equality officer Jason Palmer, the gym will just be open to self-identifying females between 14:30 and 15:30 on Wednesdays.

The decision to introduce these sessions has been influenced in part by the success of various #ThisGirlCan events such as the 2019 female-only ‘gym-takeover’ that saw over 200 students attend.

The University’s Sport, Exercise and Health department are also hoping that the sessions make it easier for members that require a women-only area for religious or cultural reasons.
