New SU bar to open in Senate House

By Benjamin Salmon, Deputy News Editor

Students have been asked to come up with names for the new bar and a new hang -out space.

Bristol SU has announced two new student spaces will be constructed as part of the new development in Senate House.

The spaces consist of a new SU bar on the Ground Floor as well as a relaxation area on the Upper Ground Floor where students can chat, reheat food and make teas and coffees.

Both are set to open in Autumn 2020 in time for the new academic year and at the same time as the overall Senate House redevelopment.

The SU has also announced that both spaces will receive their names as part of a naming competition.

On the shortlist of names that students can choose for the bar are: The Beckford, The Mandela Bar, The SU Social and The SU Hideaway.

The Beckford would be named in memory of Carmen Beckford, a founder of the St Pauls Carnival and considered as one of the ‘Seven Saints of St Pauls’.

The Mandela Bar would take on the name that the Anson Rooms bar held pre-2016 in reference to Nelson Mandela.

The new relaxation space’s shortlisted names include The SU Loft, The SU Hangout and The SU Hub.

Julio Mkok, Union Affairs Officer at Bristol SU said: ‘Students have told us that they need more spaces on campus to chill out, relax, banter and hang out with friends.

‘The Bristol SU Living Room was the start of that. I’m really excited that Bristol SU are now going to be able to provide additional spaces for students as part of the university’s Campus Heart project.’

Students will be able to vote on the names of the new spaces between Monday 27th January and Friday 7th February either online or in person at the Balloon Bar.

Ahead of the launch in Autumn 2020, updates will be released throughout the year.
